Working with Parents to Improve Pupil Premium Outcomes for their Children

At Southfields, we pride ourselves on the work we do with parents/carers of children with Pupil Premium.  We have produced a number of resources and examples to help and support parents.  Throughout the year, we will give parents/carers opportunities to find out more about a range of curriculum areas and how they can support their children to progress further in their academic careers. We will also support parents/carers with their own knowledge and understanding when necessary and where possible.

Please contact Mrs Kapler on Dojo if you would like further information on how we can support you.

Please see below for more information and national research about the value of strong parental links to improve outcomes for pupils.

Reading with your child

At Southfields, we aim to develop a love of reading and a reading culture. Reading at home with your child is a great way to connect, develop their vocabulary and reading fluency and have some great discussions about the text.

In school, we have a wide range of books for your child to read (banded books, reading for pleasure books, cuddle books, books to read to a younger sibling, poetry, subject specific books etc.) which they can bring home, share with you and change regularly.

Reading to your children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language. It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to learn about new subjects in school.

Books also help children build empathy and learn how to handle challenging feelings. Parents can use reading time as a chance to talk about emotions and how to cope with them. For example, you might discuss the character's emotions and then relate to your child's own experiences.

Just a few minutes of reading together gives you and your child a chance to slow down and connect with each other. And the sensory experience of sitting with you and hearing your voice also engages their brain in a way that makes learning easier.
